Sydney Carton is a weird Dickensian hero.The author considered Carton’s act of substitution for Charles Darney to the guillotine was the ultimate humanity.Sydney Carton lives in England,a capitalist society where he finds nothing in common with him but has no way out.The drunken barrister’s assistant is sincere and talented,but is not appreciated by the ruling class.He cares for nobody except Lucy,nor does anyone care for him.He becomes unwanted.
Not isolated is Carton’s melancholy,which embodies the disaffection of the bourgeoisie.Thus,his death casts distinct criticism on the society.On the other hand,Carton’s self-sacrifice is set by the French Revolution,which apparently takes some blame for Carton’s death and also dwarfs the character as well.Actually,Carton is an oaf of the British society,not a victim of the Revolution.It is the British society that shapes and distorts his personality that bears responsibility for his death,while the French mass are innocent.
Miss Pross is another weird self-sacrificing character in A Tale of Two Cities.Her bizarre behaviors and personality are imbued with humanism,however.She is an exception from her class,not belonging to the awakened masses.
