A brief view of the two party system in America
America is well known for its two party political system which enabled the Democrats and the Republican grasped most of its political power.In stark contrast to its Chinese counterpart where the political power centralize in one party,the duopoly system in US has its own assets and flaws.
But the first of all,it is important to address the United States was never intended to be founded as a country dominated by two political parties at the very beginning.On the contrary,her founding father George Washington did not join any political party and hoped to build a nation without the influence of political party in order to avoid conflicts and stagnation.Nevertheless,the formation of political interest group proved to be inevitable since the founder of the Democrats and the Republican,Hamilton and Madison soon emerged from immediate circle of Washington's advisor.
But questions sparked that why the two political parties formed such long time ago still have a right grip over America's political power,why there is hardly any third parties can challenge the current duopoly system.Perhaps the key lays in the plurality approach which structured the US election.Under such system,the winning party of each legislative district will take the sole seat to the state legislature and leave no reward for the party or candidate who finishes the second.In the long run,there is no incentive for people to form a new party that consistently gets votes but can not win an election.Therefore throughout time,despite no person or organization deliberately prevents third parties from forming,the election system itself hinders such changes.
To sum up,the two party political system has a few obvious advantages such as higher level of stability and easier for voters to make choices,in the meantime,it potentially limits the actual number of choices the public can make during an election and marginalized the social minority.
