The glued plastic strips and calcaneus were mounted on the

of the cross-heads for measuring the local strain in the tendon.
The room temperature was maintained at 25°C during the tests.
The specimen mounted on the material testing machine was
preconditioned with 10 oscillation cycles of 2.5% strain at a
rate of 10 mm per min,to minimize the effect of deep freezing
on the tissue.After preconditioning,the specimen was elongated
to 2.5% strain and maintained for 10 min,which was
modified from the protocol of Fung et al.17 The loads were
recorded throughout the test at a sampling rate of 5 Hz.The
difference between the initial and final load was expressed as
a percentage of the initial load to represent the load-relaxation.
After the above procedures,the specimen was subjected to a
failure test at a loading rate of 500 mm/min.17 The maximum
load from the load-displacement curve represents the ultimate
tensile strength,and the gradient in the linear portion immediately
after the toe region of the curve represents the structural
stiffness.
