In Western culture,Birthday cake is a dessert (甜食) served to a person on his or her birthday.Birthday cakes are usually decorated (装饰) with the person’s name and carry a message of congratulations (贺辞) .Candles equal to (等于) the age of the person are also placed on the cake.There is also a tradition to place one extra (额外的) candle to bring good luck.Usually the most popular flavor of Birthday cakes is chocolate.

History of Birthday cake can date back to (追溯到) the ancient Greeks (古希腊人).They made round or moon shaped honey cakes and took it to the Goddess (女神) of Moon.However,some people believe that the tradition of Birthday cake started in Germany in Middle Ages (中世纪).Sweet dough (生面团) was given the shape of baby Jesus and was used to celebrate his birthday.
Why is Birthday Cake Round?
In earlier times,Birthday cakes were mostly round in shape.Greeks offered round shape cake to the Goddess of Moon as it stood for moon.Some people think that cake in the ancient world associates with (有联系) the cycles (循环) of life and nature.Round shapes were preferred as the cycle.
