Damage control is one of the more challenging aspects of company.In the mid-1970's the American grain industry was wracked by charges of corruption .grain companies were accused of bribing inspectors within the United States and companies abroad.Congressional investigations eventually led to new laws making it illegal for Amercian companies to pay off foreign officials,which placed U.S.businesses on a higher ethical plane than most developed countries.
Cargill,the world's largest private company,responded to the crisis with a seriesof letters to employees,outlining the nature of the controversy,stating the company's position,and asserting the nCargill's policy of upright dealings.The first letter below was written by President Fred Sneed shortly after the controversy broke.Sneed's successor,Whitney MacMillan,wrote the second letter six months later.
Both letters place the controversy--which had more to do with other companies--in the context of Cargill's interests.Despite the intense competition of the grain industry,Cargill reaffirmed its corporate ethic of integrity.
