Design for Maintenance
Integral tanks are the hardest to maintain. It is better to have a separate unit, accessible from all sides. Small tanks, in fact, are sometimes mounted on casters.
Equip the tank with cleanout doors and slope the bottom toward the doors. Provide a drain cock or discharge valve at the low point of the bottom and at other low points if this is necessary for complete drainage. Put a manhole cover on the tank top for removing filters and strainer.
Provide a connection for hooking up to a portable filtration unit. Look into the variety of filter types available that allow element change without flushing dirt into the system. Or even better, provide a prefill tank ahead of the main reservoir.
Write the assembly, paining, testing, and maintenance instructions before settling on final details of the design. Here are some important tips.
If the tank is made of cast iron, don’t paint the interior surfaces, but be sure to remove all grit and core sand. Surfaces must be sandblasted.
If the tank is made of sheet steel, clean it thoroughly to remove all dirt, chips, and burrs. Use solvent and rags to remove any grease or oil and then dry with clean rags. If the tank is slightly rusted, clean by wire brushing or grinding. Heavily rusted and scaled surfaces should be shotblasted.
Painting technique depends on which hydraulic fluid will be used in your system. If the fluid has a petroleum base, coat all interior surfaces with an oil-resistant paint recommended by a reputable supplier. For fire-resistant fluids with a phosphate ester base, use no paint. Special paints resistant to phosphate esters are available, but the fluid itself is noncorrosive and provides the necessary protective coating.
If the fluid is an oil-water or water-glycol emulsion, don’t apply paint to the surfaces because the emulsion will probably peel it off. But if you must paint, obtain detailed information from the manufacturer of the emulsion.
