The Southern right whale is one of three whales listed as endangered under Tasmania’s Threatened Species Protection Act 1995.Along with the blue and humpback whale,it is also classified as nationally endangered under the Federal act.
Their numbers are unknown,but are probably just a few thousand worldwide.They produce one calf every three years and take about 10 years to reach breeding age.
By the early 1900s Southern right whales had been driven to extinction because of whaling.(In 1806 Australia’s first whaling station was established in the Derwent River near Hobart.) It is estimated that more than 26,000 southern right whales had been killed in Australia and New Zealand alone by the time they were protected in 1935.
Southern right whales got their name because whalers considered them the ‘right’ whale to kill.One reason for this was that their large amount of fat made them float after harpooning and they were easy to collect.They are also very slow swimmers and docile enough to approach.Most importantly they had a great deal of the highly prized oil used at the time for heating,lighting and in cosmetics.
