Modern geology has for its aim the deciphering of the whole evolution of the earth from the time of the earliest records that can be recognized in the rocks to the present day.(5) So ambitious a program requires much subdivision of effort,and in practice it is convenient to divide the subject into a number of branches.The key words of the three main branches are the materials of the earth's rocky framework (mineralogy and petrology); the geological processes or machinery of the earth,by means of which changes of all kinds are brought about (physical geology); and finally,the succession of these changes,or the history of the earth (historical geology).

The greatest challenges we face today are global and they demand global cooperation.That’s why international exchanges like this one are so important.The United States must work closely with China,India,and other nations to fundamentally transform the way we use and produce energy.
We need to make our homes,offices,and factories more energy efficient.We need to learn to capture and store the carbon emissions from coal.And we must develop new sources of clean,renewable energy that will power the world economy for decades to come.
Both China and India have begun to invest in these technologies,just as we are doing in the United States.But the urgency of the challenges demands more from all of us.
