2.2.2.1 Greetings and terms of address.
It is estimated that at least a dozen different greetings,and people chose proper one to greet different people they meet on different occasions.For example,people greet a new acquaintance with the words “how do you do” and they will expect the same answers.Yet they will greet a friend or the man they met more than once with “how are you”,and they will answer “Fine,thank you”,which is different form our Chinese.A Chinese speaker may greet anther people no matter they meet him for the first time or he is an old friend with the same words “Ni Hao.”Or “Ni Hao.” and will expect the same answer.
Anther notable difference between the two greeting system is that most Chinese people tend to greet acquaintances with “Where are you heading for?” or “have you eaten meal?”,which obviously will cause misunderstanding and puzzle ,even cause some unpleasant because they may think we are interfere their privacy if we greet an English native speaker.
There are also some different terms of address between Chinese and English,which is also easy to cause misunderstanding for the Chinese learners of English or English learners of Chinese.For example,“Tongzhi” was once used in Chinese for all people irrespective of sex,position or marital status.In English-speaking counties,“Mr.” “Mrs.” “Ms.” “Miss.” would be appropriate in similar situations.It is also interesting should note that in recent years “Mr.” and “Mrs.” are picked up to replace the term “Tongzhi” with the changes of society.Meanwhile,“Shifu” is frequently used to show respect for strangers,while the English native speakers,on similar occasions,would use “Sir” or “Madam”.
Anther obvious difference in terms of address lies in the kinship term.In Chinese,terms such as “uncle,aunt,grandpa,and granny” are used as an honorific title for senior people or strangers,such as in “Uncle Zhang” and “Grammy Li”,which would be make the English native speaker puzzled if we address an English native speaker in this way.Similarly,the use of respectful titles,such as Chairman Mao,Premier Zhou,which is used to indicate people’s influential status,is typical of Chinese culture.Such practice,however,is less common in English speaking countries.
