Thomas Edison was a man of wonderful ability.His inventions laid the foundation for the rapid development of technology in the 20th century.He was called a wizard of invention.
The Edison family had come to the United States from Holland in the early part of the 18th century.Thomas was born in 1847 and was an unusually curious child.He was so dreamy and quiet that a teacher once called him stupid .His mother was so displeased that she took her son out of school and taught him reading.Thomas was a very quick reader and he remembered everything.
In order to make money for books and for his scientific experiments,Thomas sold newspapers and candy on a train.At the age of fifteen,he printed a newspaper of his own.
One day not long after he had started his newspaper,Tom saw a child playing on the tracks in front of a train.He jumped off the station platform and snatched the child from the wheels of the train.How brave he was!The father happened to be the stationmaster.He was so grateful that he offered to teach Tom to become a telegraph operator.In three weeks Edison was a better telegrapher than his teacher.
In the 1860s and 1870s the telegraph field was a “high-tech” occupation.Edison’s growing knowledge of telegraph technology made his mind even more active,and in 1868,at age21,he made his first real invention.
